Looking for a Squirrel Feeder? 4 Basic Types of Squirrel Feeders
Entertained by squirrels?
Want to offer squirrels their own food but don't know what squirrel feeders are out there?
Introduction
Although most manufacturers design squirrel feeders for corn cobs, you can also offer seed cakes, seeds, and peanuts with different types of squirrel feeders.
1. Seed Cake Feeders
Birds and squirrels enjoy seed cakes -- different seeds packed together with an edible glue of some kind. They come in different shapes and sizes.
Seed cake feeders include some similar to suet feeders as well as hanging feeders.
2. Seed Mix Feeders
Much like bird feeders, these hopper feeders come in a metallic (or wood and plexiglass) design.
The metallic squirrel feeders prevent squirrels chewing their way in.
Birds will enjoy the seed from these feeders as well, but they may not feed at the same time the squirrel does.
3. Peanut Feeders

Some peanut feeders are wood boxes with a plexiglass front; others are wood boxes with an attached jar. A few other designs are available from time to time.
Very few are the hanging type; most mount to a tree or post.
Open-fronted designs will also attract larger woodpeckers, jays, and other birds.
5. Corn Cob Feeders
If you're trying to lure squirrels away from your bird feeders, know that squirrels generally -- but not always -- like corn cobs better than birdseed.
Spinning Feeders

You might find a spinning corn cob feeder the most entertaining of the different cob feeders.
The squirrel's weight on the feeder starts the feeder spinning, so the squirrel eats while moving through the air on the feeder.
Hanging Feeders
Hanging cob feeders are very simple -- you fix the corn cob on a spike or holder and hang anywhere convenient.
For more fun, hang the corn cob feeder with a bungee cord.
Simple Spike Feeders
Simply some sort of corn cob spike, box, and mounting mechanism, these corn cob feeders are the most basic.
Bonus: Corn Logs
Less mess than corn cobs, corn logs pack several cob's worth of corn into one log. Use them in place of corn cobs.
