12 Ways to Avoid Birds Crashing into Windows
Are birds crashing into your windows? And injuring themselves?
Collisions can be prevented.
Birds crash into highly reflective windows, not noticing the glass. This collision can result in serious injury or death for the bird.
Drawing the birds away from windows by moving feeders and birdbaths further away is hard to do in a small outdoor space, so you may need to try to disrupt the glass reflectivity or distract the bird by
- Attaching solid or semi-transparent silhouettes or stickers to the outside of the window pane
- Attaching an artistic-looking window film that looks like acid etching or sandblasting
- Applying a film to the outside of the window that reduces reflectivity but still allows light to pass through and people to see out
- Spraying on materials like fake Christmas snow
- Drawing streaks with a bar of soap
- Altering the lighting inside the house
- Drawing a shade
- Taping paper or cardboard to the inside of the panes (rather ugly, though)
- Reducing the amount of light with trees or awnings
- Using netting to cover the outside of windows to act as a vertical trampoline
- Attaching old aluminum plates, unwanted CDs, or other fluttery, lightweight, and shiny items just outside the window
- Hang branches just outside the window
