Review: Droll Yankees Armored Nyjer® Feeder Model TH-3
Droll Yankees Armored Nyjer® Feeder is a solid, quality feeder with few drawbacks.
The feeder design deters squirrels, and the feeder construction is durable. The seed ports are a little hard for finches to access at first, and debris can become trapped in the bottom of the feeder.
Performance and Durability
The feeder functions well over several years of service; mine is still intact with little rust. The armored design does deter squirrels, and finches do like to use the feeder.
From my observation, the finches access the seed with difficulty, at least initially. My guess is that the polycarbonate material is stiff enough and the seed ports small enough to make getting the seed hard work for a finch's beak. However, it doesn't seem to deter the birds all that much, and the issue is balanced out by the quality of the feeder.
Setup and Installation
I've had this particular feeder for several years, but from what I remember setup was very easy. Installation is even easier - hang from a tree limb, deck-mounted hook, wall-mounted hook, or ceiling attachment.
Cleaning
This feeder is easy to clean for the most part. The one exception would be the small part of the feeder between the last seed port and the very base of the feeder. With mine, debris accumulates in this spot and is very difficult to clean.
Additional Details
This feeder, one of many tube feeders offered by Droll Yankee, is model TH-3. Made of a polycarbonate plastic and unpainted stainless steel, it is made to last. Droll Yankees designed this nyjer feeder not just to feed thistle-loving birds like finches but also to deter squirrels.
Droll Yankees built the TH-3 with stainless steel wire, metal die castings, a UV-stabilized polycarbonate tube, armored-banded seed ports, metal perches, a threaded base, and a powder-coated finish.
The steel, polycarbonate, and powder coat aid in durability, the threaded base allows for screw-on attachments, and the seed ports and perches are at a comfortable spacing for birds.
