How to Place and Maintain Wild Bird Roosts
Confused about the care and placement of roost boxes for wild birds?
Installing and placing your roost in a good location will increase the chance you'll see birds using it, and regular maintenance of your roost will keep the wild birds using it healthy.
Roosts seem to do well
- on the sunny, south side of a house or large tree
- away from the prevailing winds
- in a sheltered spot to minimize the entry of water into the roost
- in a predator-inaccessible location, perhaps even mounting the roost on a pole or protecting with a baffle.
For the health of the wild birds visiting your wildlife porch, patio, or balcony, keep your roosting boxes or roosting pockets clean. In early fall and late winter clean the debris from the roost.
