The Basics of Feeding Wildlife on your Wildlife Porch
Just like us humans, critters are drawn to places that have good food. If you are not particular and want results relatively quickly, birds and squirrels are perhaps the easiest to attract to your wildlife porch, patio, deck, or balcony. You can also attract other wildlife like friendly bees and butterflies.
Example
For example, providing a simple wall-mounted feeder filled with sunflower kernels will attract both squirrels and birds. In fact, just about any kind of food is squirrel food, while types of bird feed are slightly more limited.
Choices
Beyond the wall-mounted feeder, your choices of what to put the critter food into is almost endless. Feeders come in many, many different shapes, sizes, materials, and mounting styles.
Plants
Instead of (or in addition to) a feeder, consider providing food via a container garden. Certain plants flower, providing nectar for bees and butterflies, while other plants with berries provide a small feast for birds. Some plants are even good munchies for butterfly larvae!
